You might need Campervan Counsel if:
You received a violation notice out of nowhere
Your van was previously allowed but is now being challenged
Rules are unclear or inconsistently enforced
Neighbors are driving complaints
You’re trying to avoid escalation
For years now, my legal work has overlapped with cycling, outdoor recreation, advocacy, and the ways people move through and experience the world. When I’m not on a bike, you’ll usually find me adventuring in my van.
I bought my first campervan in late 2020, at a time when the world felt uncertain and heavy. I didn’t grow up camping—in fact, I was firmly a “hotel kind of person.” So it surprised me, and everyone who knows me, how quickly I took to van life.
Since then, I’ve traveled to incredible places I might never have experienced otherwise. There’s something about the simplicity of it—less stuff, more presence. Sunscreen and bug spray over makeup. One shirt, one pair of pants. Open space, fresh air, and a reset that’s hard to find anywhere else.
I’m now on my second van and living what I half-jokingly call “intermittent van life”—spending roughly half of each month out adventuring, often intentionally off-grid.
And every time, I come back a better human for it.
Which is why it was jarring to find myself on the receiving end of HOA and community complaints—despite doing my diligence upfront to confirm I was in compliance.
I know what it feels like to be blindsided by a complaint when no one ever raised a concern directly.
To feel singled out.
To be labeled a “rule breaker.”
I also saw how unclear rules, inconsistent enforcement, and poor communication can escalate situations that never needed to become conflicts in the first place—and how quickly that can erode a sense of community.
That experience made something clear:
There are very few attorneys who truly understand the legal issues surrounding campervans, adventure vehicles, HOA restrictions, parking disputes, and modern mobile lifestyles.
And these issues are becoming increasingly common.
So I’m excited to introduce a new sub-specialty within Hottman Law Office:
Campervan Counsel.
This work focuses on helping campervan and adventure vehicle owners navigate:
• HOA disputes and enforcement
• CC&R interpretation
• Vehicle classification issues
• Parking and access conflicts
• Pre-litigation strategy and resolution
• Practical compliance and risk avoidance
As both a lawyer and someone actively living this lifestyle—including working remotely from my van—I understand these issues from both a legal and personal perspective.
What’s become clear is that campervans and adventure vehicles are no longer fringe. They’re part of a broader shift toward more flexible, outdoor-oriented, and mobile ways of living. But many HOA rules—and how they’re enforced—haven’t kept pace with that shift.
My goal isn’t conflict for the sake of conflict. It’s clarity, fairness, and practical solutions—and helping people navigate these situations thoughtfully and strategically.
They say the wound is where the work begins.
This one opened a new door—and I’m all in.
